Young India

GUIDE (GCS) regularly tries to motivate young people and infect I can say their numbers are touching crones . We work for bringing the young blood to the front level and understand their responsibility…for an better tomorrow.

Here are a few words GCS USES TO MOTIVATE YOUNG TURKS…..

I personally think that we should work on the problem, so as to give an alternative to the judiciary/apex court, and start a campaign to light up the fire in the hearts of every young dedicated and sincere Indian citizen to be awakened, which will "Purify the Good & Destroy the Bad" - a "Jwala" which can resurrect our India into "Sone ki Chidiya" once again.

http://blogs.siliconindia.com/GUIDE

The campaign also means that we should also know our obligations & responsibilities to the country and fulfill these. If all of us, or a major chunk of people ensure that their rights as a citizen are exercised and and are fulfilling their obligations as the citizens, almost all the problems plaguing the country can be solved, either Local issues or National issues.

Every young dedicated and sincere Indian citizen should be willing to take the onus of their local areas, while support can be solicited from other people in this movement. While the local issues can be solved by ensuring your rights for accountability from the agencies responsible for solving the problems, pan-geographic issues can be taken up on a central basis.

To Start with we will have Commit certain time of our day, week or month to take up the issues of our area. Each one of us can be a Leader - step out and speak up and take up the cudgels. Motivate the people around you to join the movement and be part of the problem solving in their own area......

Are you ready for it....we need to start working on it now ..IF WE CARE

GUIDE: An Introduction to the Consulting Business

So, you want to be a consultant, eh? It can be a highly competitive, extraordinarily difficult, and frustratingly challenging business to be involved with at times, but the level of freedom and amount of experience in many facets of the business universe are a very positive trade off for all the hard work. When handled correctly - and planned with care - a career as a consultant can yield much more financial and personal freedom for the professional. An experienced consultant can make several orders of magnitude more salary for a comparably educated and experienced "company employee", and can enjoy many other benefits, such as making your own schedule, working on challenging and interesting projects within a wide range of companies, getting responsibilities to match your experience and your technical know-how, guiding your own career development through obtaining multiple simultaneous experiences in diverse professional sectors, and increasing autonomy and responsibility along the entire scope of your career. Individuals who are attracted to the consultant, professional, styling are usually described with terms like "self starter" and "go-getter". Certainly this type of career decision will demand a certain level of sacrifice, particularly at the onset of your career. But through the steep experience curve and unavoidable initial difficulties, many professional have emerged with greatly satisfying, highly compensated, and most importantly.immensely rewarding careers in the field(s) of their choice.

How To Start Your Own Coaching/Consulting Business

Many times people are looking for a solution to a problem in their life. The problem may be a professional problem that is related to their job or career. Or the problem may be a personal one that is affecting the way they deal with the rest of their life. They may need to find a solution to a huge problem at work, or they may be feeling less than satisfied with the turn their life has taken. No matter why they need answers, or how they want to find those answers, there is a method and means for them to accomplish it. They simply need to decide how they want to tackle the problem. Consultants and coaches are available to help clients reach their fullest potential. The key to reaching that potential is to empower themselves with the strongest tool available. In some cases this will be a consultant and in other cases it will be a certain type of coach. The method that they choose will depend on their needs and in what direction they want to focus their energies. Sometimes asking for a little help while looking for a solution or trying to achieve a goal is difficult for some people. This is becoming less the case as more people and corporations are turning to coaches and consultants to help them find viable solutions to problems or help in manifesting their dreams. Consultants and coaches are trained to assist people by providing them with the best training and latest techniques available. Some coaches and consultants will work together in what is known as a "hybrid" mode. This simply means that clients get the best of both the consultant and the coach to help them create solutions. In other words, they get advice and experience to push them forward, motivation and brainstorming techniques when they're at a standstill, and insight and inspiration to push them to their highest potential in both their professional and personal life. This book will provide you with information for both the consulting and the coaching business and provide you with the information you need to start your own consulting or coaching business.

Things to Consider Before You Become a Consultant There are many items to consider before...

There are many items to consider before deciding to make the commitment of becoming a consultant. When one embarks on the mission to participate in this career choice one should be clear that they are taking on many responsibilities that employees within a larger organization may take for granted.

Starting a consultancy is starting YOUR OWN BUSINESS. Although it is common for consultants to function under the umbrella of a larger corporation, such participation is typically in a freelance capacity and consultants don't always enjoy many of the perks that their colleagues within the corporate hierarchy do. This is not to say that a career in consultancy does not have its own set of desirable characteristics, but simply that it is good to be aware that there exist profound differences at a fundamental level regarding the disciplines necessary to be successful at a consultancy as opposed to achieving while inside the comparatively rigid corporate structure. Among the characteristics that are particular to this type of career choice is a level a freedom, both personal and professional, which demands a certain level of discipline to successfully work within. In many ways someone who has decided to become a consultant has made a decision to allow their work to become intertwined into their life to a degree that "personal life" and "professional life" become indistinguishably fused.

Unlike working at a "9 to 5" job, the consultant must be prepared to work around others schedules and must have the capacity to fit into numerous and varied work paradigms.

What You Should Consider BEFORE Starting Your Consulting Business

Below is a list of some items to consider before taking the plunge into a professional consulting career.

• Is becoming a consultant the right choice for me? The first thing you want to do is take a sober look at the lifestyle and career paradigm of a consultant business. Like we noted above, you should be prepared to make some sacrifices (particularly at the onset of your career) in both your personal and professional life.

• Considerations for education and/or certifications: Depending on which particular realm of the consulting world you are considering joining some specific certifications may be necessary to practice in your chosen field. A certain degree of certified competency is expected in certain consulting jobs, such as computer consultants. For example, it is extremely recommended for someone interested in being successful as a computer hardware consultant to have an A+ Certification. Someone interested in embarking on a career as Microsoft Windows consultant will want to secure MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) certification. Although in some cases certification is recommended, there are others where certification is mandatory and is legally regulated. Be sure to execute all necessary due diligence and research potential legal requirements well ahead of time.

• Are you comfortable being in control of and responsible for running all aspects of a business?

Is This The Right Business For You?

When you get involved in the consulting business you will be in the captain's chair of the entire enterprise, as well as simultaneously being your own secretary (at least in the beginning). Are you prepared to write your own schedule? Do you have the desire and the means to be responsible for your own time management? Are you prepared to market yourself and network within the professional community to secure contracts for your blooming business? Are you prepared to do whatever it takes, be it a 12 hour day of cold calls when business is slow or putting in the extra time to seek out individual clients on a one-to-one basis? If you can answer yes to all these questions, then you are might be just the type who will greatly succeed in the type of business model.

How to Get Started Once you decided that a career in consulting is right for you

There are a few things you can take care of from the get go to ensure a smooth transition into the world of professional consultancy. Like we mentioned earlier, organization plays a key role in all phases of a consultant's career. From the early stages of planning the business structure and types consulting you wish to engage in, to the execution of daily workflow, to the discipline required to keep legally sound income and tax records, being a consultant can mean being efficient and thorough in the areas of organization and planning. Whenever possible, it is recommended to plan as far ahead as possible for matters that can be planned ahead for.

3 Basic Ways You Can Set Up Your Business From A Legal Standpoint

Establish your businesses' legal/fiscal foundation. It is in your best interest to formalize and solidify your business structure right from the onset. This is in the interest of having a well thought out plan both legally and for tax purposes. In a nutshell, the three basic ways you can set up your business from a legal standpoint are:

1. Sole proprietorship: This is the easiest to accomplish from a legal point and requires the least investment of time and funds to do. However, it should be noted, that sole proprietors accept all business related liabilities at a personal level. To put this in another way, in the eyes of the law, the individual and the business are for all intents and purposes the same entity. So, for example, if in the course of your business dealings you come under legal scrutiny for any reason (being sued by a client, for instance), resulting litigation may be able to hold your personal finances and assets as damages to the plaintiff in the case. To put it bluntly, you are putting your butt on the line when you engage in a sole proprietorship.

2. Partnership: This approach is similar to sole proprietorship, but involves two individuals who share legal and fiscal responsibility for the business together. This partnership can be instituted in a variety of ways and typically involves the interested parties negotiating a contract that elaborates legally on the particulars of the partnership "deal". For example, there are "silent" partnerships, which involve certain parties within the contract holding all legal obligations but not participating in the actual running of the business.

3. Corporation: A corporation is the most legally and fiscally complicated method of starting a business, but has its benefits as well. When a business is incorporated it becomes a legal entity of its own. Incorporation allows for businesses to take greater strategic risks than sole proprietorships and partnerships because they provide for a legal and fiscal layer between the corporate entity and the individuals involved in the business. Under normal circumstances, someone starting out in the consulting world will not have the need or the resources to incorporate, but it is common for consulting firms (such as Booz-Allen-Hamilton, for example) to establish their business in this manner.

Important Interview Tips

The best mantra for appearing for interviews is being fully prepared. It important that job-seekers use every conceivable means possible to prepare for the interview. Understand that interviewing is a skill; as with all skills, preparation and practice enhance the quality of that skill. Preparation can make the difference between getting an offer and getting rejected. There is no one “perfect” way to prepare for an interview. However, there are some strategies to enhance one’s chances for interview success.

Here are some steps to follow while preparing for an interview:

1. Self-assessment: We recommend regular self-assessment, but most people resist this step. When one is unemployed or fearing pink slips in recession, the time is right for reassessing current skills, talents, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, interests, and work values. In addition, it is clearly time to re-examine accomplishments and achievements, particularly those that may be relevant to a prospective employer. We recommend keeping an on-going accomplishments file in which to maintain such items as articles, congratulatory letters, kudos from the boss or clients/customers, 360 evaluations, and descriptions of successful activities as they occur.

2. Updating your resume regularly: The accomplishments and successes file serves as a starting point to reassessing your resume. If we assume that a resume must be accomplishments-based rather than descriptive of one’s responsibilities, then the file serves to jog one’s memory about recent notable activities. Bare-bone the resume by removing all irrelevant material and try at getting it onto one page. Use functional headings to help focus the reader on what you have done and what you can do for the new employer. Make the resume factually correct.

Next, let’s assume you have a interview lined up. What to do in such a situation?

3. Research, research and do more research: Depending on the time you have, use every possible means to learn all you can about the company and position. Use the internet to locate and read information about the company/organization. Access books, journals, magazines, newspapers and any reference materials useful for investors — and job-seekers! Read online resources for major business publications, such as Moneycontrol, Economic Times, Rediff, Business Standard, Forbes, Money, The Wall St. Journal, etc. Go online to the company’s Web site as well as competitors’ sites. Also, prepare questions to ask. These questions should reflect your research on the company. Do NOT ask about salary or benefits!

4. Use your alumni network to the best advantage: Contact your classmates or alumni who work for that company. You could find them on Linkedin. Choose fairly recent graduates to better understand the interview and hiring process. People who have worked long enough can guide you about corporate culture, history, and career paths.

5. Re-assess your resume: Review your resume thoroughly and know everything that’s on it.

6. Practicing typical and basic interview questions - Why are you interested in this Industry?

- Why are you interested in this Company?

- Why are you interested in this Job?

- Tell us about yourself and your career till now?

7. Be prepared to discuss anything on your resume. Be prepared to answer questions like: * your greatest weakness

* your lack of related experience

* your low marks

* your lack of leadership experiences

* your regular job hopping

8. Practice with a friend or in front of a mirror: Focus on your voice, mannerisms and gestures, facial expressions, poise, energy and enthusiasm in your answers as well as in your body language. Try and improve, enhance, develop your answers. Because interviewing is a skill, you can only improve your style and acumen with practice. Practice is important too in assuaging fears and nervousness. However, a degree of tension is beneficial toward maintaining a level of alertness that causes you to sit up straight and forward in your seat, leaning toward the interviewer. The ideal is to strike a balance between poise/calm and energy/enthusiasm.

9. Final preparations: Select appropriate attire long before the interview day. Know the culture of the organization for which you are interviewing and dress accordingly. Know the location of your interview. Plan to arrive at the office 10 minutes in advance. Allow ample time for traffic, the possibility of getting lost, and parking difficulties. Bring extra copies of your resume in a folder or portfolio. DO NOT ASK ABOUT SALARY OR BENEFITS!

Telephonic Interview --(PART 2 )

Telephonic Interview

Dearth of time has set off a new-fangled recruitment practice these days- most organisations have now begun to interview the candidates telephonically as a preliminary assessment to sift through the large number of applicants. Once you have sent your resume to an organisation, any telephone ring could find you answering the questions of your prospective employer. And since most people are not quite accustomed to this novel approach of interview, some apprehensions and wavering are only natural to loom over.

But here we are to the rescue- once you are through with this article, all your doubts and fears regarding telephonic interview will fade away, and you'll find yourself in a much better position to get along with such interviews.

Why Telephonic Interview

The reasons may be many and varied, the most common one being the paucity of time on the part of the recruiter and the excess of resumes to screen through. But more than the reasons that lead to an organisation conducting such interviews, the aspect to give accent is the conclusions that the person at the other end draws from a telephonic interview, based on which you may either sail through to the main interview, or be done away with.

What to expect

Since the interview will be preliminary in nature, you won't generally be asked any technical stuff since that is more likely to be saved for the main interview. The focus would be more on reckoning your communications skills and inferring if you have gathered ample information about the company, and some other HR sort of stuff. So as your homework, you need to envisage the likely questions that you might be asked and draw a rough outline of the appropriate answers, so that you don't hum and haw while answering. However, don't be too expectant to the point of cramming the answers and always be prepared for some unanticipated questions. Gather relevant information about the company to prove a point that you are genuinely interested in joining and not just filling in the time.

Basic Preparation

Since the telephonic interview can be conducted any day and anytime, you need to make some basic preparation beforehand to avoid nerves. The very first thing obviously is to ascertain that your phone is in order! Next, you need to keep important documents and some writing material always near the phone to jot down whatever may be important. Asking for time to get writing material etc. once the interview has begun would send a wrong message. Incase you are not prepared with writing material or not mentally prepared, it's prudent to humbly ask for a five minutes to get into the act, but once the interview has kicked off, you've got to get right down to business. And since the interviewer can't see you, he or she will be counting entirely on the impression you'll manage to make through the telephonic discussion. So be well prepared to avoid being jittery. Remember, being proactive and articulate will be the pros that your interview will hinge upon.

The Approach
The purpose of the interview is to access you on the basis of whatever impression you manage to make through a brief conversation, so make sure that you give your all to pass with flying colours to the next stage. Bear in mind the following things while you take on the telephonic interview:

Be eloquent and expressive. Avoid long pauses. However, don't be too hasty to the point of uttering something wrong or irrelevant. Maintain your exposure and be calm.
Sound cheerful and effervescent. Vivaciousness always casts a good impression.

Don't let anyone else guide you while answering. This will result in confusion and you might end up stammering. Better be alone while being interviewed. Switch off the TV etc. to avoid distraction.

Don't gab and be confined to exactly what you are asked. Don't delve too much on any topic and be succinct. This applies to all sorts of interviews.

Don't show any scorn or contempt for the earlier or the present employer or organisation. Be very subtle while recounting the reasons for quitting the job. Or else the interviewer might infer that you can ditch his organization as well for some trifling reasons.
Show fervent enthusiasm at the prospect of joining the organization. Inquire about your role and the nature of projects you'd be undertaking. But don't ask such questions in the coarse of the interview; save them for later when the interviewer himself would ask you for any questions or doubts towards the conclusion of the interview.

Speak clearly, and slowly if required. Avoid using words you don't quite know how to pronounce. And never assume that simple language will mar your chances; the only thing that matters the most is what you say and how lucidly you say. However, you can use lexical language only if you are good enough to manage, otherwise better stick to simple but coherent words.

Be assertive and confident in whatever you say. However, don't sound cocksure.
If the interview was shorter than you had expected, don't show dismay or surprise. May be that you were simply good enough to sway the interviewer within a few minutes! Always conclude the interview with a positive note lest all your good work should be ruined. Always wind up positively with appropriate compliments.

So if you adhere to the above-prescribed gimmicks, you'll just fare well enough to end up with an invitation for a face-to-face interview. And the confidence of having cleared the first obstacle will show up there as well!
Best of Luck for the stage two! ................................Sourced  frm Web.....GUIDE

Some Important Tips ___If you R looking For a Job

Gearing Up for the Interview

That nobody is perfect is the maxim that sounds even more pertinent in the context of an interview. Interview is without a doubt a trepidation for everyone, and the novices and the old hands alike find themselves on pins and needles at the prospect of being interviewed.

What makes people lose sleep over the interviews is essentially an apprehension of the unforeseen, a dread of being confronted with something they don't know; and no matter how many interviews has one faced and sailed through, every new interview brings a new pain in the neck. Jitteriness hangs over everyone; only the intensity may differ.

And though there are no alternatives to awareness and conviction, there are certain guidelines which when followed will put off some seemingly trifling slip-ups, which could turn your interview into a dismal affair at the end of the day. These are the gimmicks that must be exercised if the interview is to be saved from some apparently petty blunders.

Before Taking the Bull by the Horns

The homework starts right from the word go- immediately after you receive the interview call. Apart from brushing up your technical know-how, which is undoubtedly pivotal to your success, you need to pay heed to some aspects that will pump up your confidence level and help keep off nerves at the interview table.

Reaching for the interview late may put the interviewer off, as it can also dampen your spirit. So to have an idea as to when you should leave for the interview, just go by the venue at least one day prior to the interview as a rehearsal.

Envisage the likely questions and picture yourself answering them with confidence. Keep telling yourself that you are good enough to sail through. This will infuse just enough confidence in you, and that'll make all he difference in the interview.

Consider the dress you'll be wearing. 'Formal dress' is often a deceptive phrase as it may mean different clothing for different companies. Sometimes, it's indispensable to put on a three-piece, while the other day it may seem too much of affectation; only a tie with formal shirt and trousers may do. Make out what dress could be apposite for a particular company.

If the company is too far-off and your dress is likely to get rumpled in the bus, better travel in a taxi. Carry a comb in your pocket. There is no excuse for a clumsy appearance in the interview.

Reach the venue at least half an hour in advance so that you have enough time for having a breather and bracing up for the interview. Arriving at the last minute and entering the interview room panting will reveal you in a poor light and you won't be in the right kind of frame to take on the interview.

In case the interview does not commence on the scheduled time, don't lose you focus. Don't be distracted and maintain your composure. Read some magazine or talk to the people about the company. Go out for a breath of air but don't go too far away. And don't ever let it show that you disliked being made to wait. You have got some time on hand, so use it discreetly.

Inside the Interview Chamber

Pull yourself up the moment you are summoned inside the interview chamber, and enter the room with an air of confidence. And while you are taking on the real deal, practice the following:

Maintain a body language suggesting confidence and cheerfulness. Don't look uneasy or dispirited. Smile at appropriate moments.

Maintain eye contact while answering the questions. This will suggest that you are confident enough

If there is more than one interviewer, address to all of them. Remember names if you can and address by the names. Sound confident but avoid being brash.

Saying 'sorry' or 'pardon' when you couldn't quite get the interviewer is civility, but making the interviewer repeat something for you too often could really make you sorry at the end of the day. You say 'sorry; once, and the interviewer willingly repeats, you say again, and he takes notice, you say thrice, and his exasperation shows, you go on to say yet again, and you just lose it all. What puts the interviewer off is the revelation that you are not all ears during the interview. So better listen attentively and minimize 'being sorry' or 'begging pardon'.

Don't speak too loudly or too faintly. Maintain a pitch that is audible as well within the perimeter of courtesy.

Don't delve too much on a topic. Neither keep the answers too short. Just speak enough on every topic.

Use wit and make the interviewer smile. But again, discern the faint edge between humour and discourtesy. Also, whatever you speak to bring smiles on the interviewers' face should sound germane to the topic. However, use this trick sparingly- making the interviewer chuckle twice in an interview is just sufficient.

Some questions may be devised to judge your self-restraint and tolerance as a professional. So if a question sounds provoking, don't fall for the trick. Avoid acting feverishly and maintain your cool. Handle such questions discreetly and with shrewdness.

Try to make out what is going through the interviewer's mind while you are answering to the questions. His body language may well give you a clue if he's listening to you attentively or you are just pushing on an off-putting gab. Put on the brakes the moment you discern that you have deviated off the point.

The interviewer might ask you towards the close of the interview if you have any questions. Don't think it impolite to ask a question or two. Rather, not asking a question could revel that you just want the interview to be over, so go ahead. However, exercise caution regarding the question you pose. Never inquire about the salary. Preferably, show inquisitiveness about your role or the organisation.

In the end when all is said and done and you make an exit from the interview cell, you might well be knowing in your heart that you've just made it. After all, it's all about being confident and acting astutely.

How to remove all barriers.....guide

Read this beautiful article somewhere...Thought of sharing with you all, I will put my add on and viewpoint in my next blog article latter .........

Are you as successful as you can be? Are you limiting your personal growth? In this article, you will learn how to remove all barriers that prevent you from maximizing your success.

Albert Einstein formulated the theory that says that space and time are relative concepts rather than absolute concepts.

For example, consider a car speedometer reading at 65 miles per hour. How fast is the car going? This question seems like the beginning of the joke of who is buried in Grant’s tomb and you are expecting a punch line. No joke here, I assure you. As a matter of fact, most would respond 65 miles per hour. This is the correct answer if and only if you are comparing the car to someone who is not moving. However, if you compare that same car to the car driving next to it that is driving 55 miles per hour, your car is only moving at 10 miles per hour.

So, what does that have to do with sales? When you look at your sales performance, to what standard do you compare yourself? Is it to the others on the sales team? Is it to your quota? Is it to a sales record that has stood for 10 years in your company? Maybe you look at your performance relative to your income goals?

While any of these comparative points are important, they all have one thing in common. They limit your potential. How good can you be? If you set a ceiling to that, you will never know. Yes, hitting your quota is important. Achieving your income goal is also important. But could you achieve more? Could you be better? The car moving at 65 miles per hour is moving pretty fast, but only relative to a non-moving entity. Your competitors are moving right along with you. Maybe you are in the lead, but competition does not stagnate. To them, maybe you are only moving at 10 miles per hour.

Nature also uses the theory of relativity. If you put a fish in a 10 gallon tank, the fish will only grow to a certain size. The surroundings of the fish limit its size and growth. Put that same fish in a larger tank and the fish will continue to grow. Want to get better at golf? Play with better golfers. Want to run faster? Train with better runners.

What limitations are you putting on your sales success? Are you failing to achieve your quota? Are your friends on the team missing their quota too? Do you accept that because you are all failing? Or do you compare yourself to a higher standard? What are you doing each and every day to improve yourself? Is your goal just to be better, or is it to be the best?

How to get maximum productivity from work force?

Bill gates states that his wealth goes out everyday and enters his office every morning and with the statement he wants to emphasize on the value of work force. The fact is that managing work force and getting maximum productivity from them is the key issue in any organization. However, the managements used to have their own strategies like keeping an employee unbalanced always. There was a strategy to retain an employee by keeping him always unbalanced. But, with tremendous growth world-wide, employees have lost their patience over the management strategies and teaching a lesson to the managements that they expect respect for their work and also freedom. This is a drastic change in management and managing employees in the present era is a difficult task for an organization.

Management will concentrate so much on recruitment and managing the employees afterwards. There can be many justifications when a management has certain perceptions about the people they try to recruit. Its very difficult to comment upon the recruitment strategies of management and even our Infosys Narayanamurthy was not selected by Vipro when he approached them for employment.

But, retention of employees and getting maximum productivity from them is an interesting issue to dealwith. From authority, the managements now forced to embrace respect towards employees. What I feel is that the managements should:

a) inculcate a culture that talent and hardwork is rewarded at any cost;

b) ensure that each employee is respected irrespective of his status or designation;

c) not create a feeling in the employees that there is too much interference by the managing in their work;

d) ensure that every manager in the organization follows the above principles while they extract work from their subordinates;

e) create a feeling in employees that the company can not survive without its workforce and all the success belongs them.

It is true that the management should interfere when an employee does something wrong in the course damaging the company's reputation and profits. But, present day organizations and especially small companies should focus much on rightly handling the employees as otherwise it will have an impact on company's growth itself.

FREELANCE REPORTER AND CORRESPONDENT CAREER

FREELANCE REPORTERS AND FREELANCE CORRESPONDENTS are paid for the specific news stories or articles provided by them.

Freelance reporters and correspondents are in high demand as the jobs in this industry are sensitive to economic ups and downs as these industries depend on revenue from advertising.

Freelance reporters and correspondents have an advantage of not having any deadline systems. They are to work as per their own schedules. They prepare a covering story, investigate leads and news tips, probe documents and interview people at the site. Their work is usually hectic.

Freelance Reporter, Freelance Correspondent, Freelance News, Editor, Freelance Employment, Freelance writing, Freelance work

How to Become an International News Reporter

by Huw Francis

News reporting may not be a job many freelance writers even consider when they are living in a country a long way from home, or one with few news outlets in their native language. But freelance news reporting in such situations can be a good source of income for that very reason.

The large national and international news organizations have correspondents around the world. Even if they do not have a full- time journalist on location, these organizations will probably have a local stringer whom they can call for major stories.

However, smaller regional and metropolitan news outlets, and national news organizations of smaller countries, are unlikely to have such arrangements in place. Though these smaller organizations will take major news stories from the wire services and WTN or CNN, they love almost any story with a "local" interest that the big organizations are unlikely to pick up.

The Local Side of International News

Local and regional news media generally run local and regional news items. If a major event, such as an earthquake, occurs somewhere in the world, they may mention it, but they will soon revert to local news unless their core audience is directly affected by the story.

Within any major news event, however, you will find people who don't warrant the international spotlight because they are not senior enough, or not famous enough, to gain international notice. But town, county, or state news organizations would love to run a story on how someone from their area is involved in an international event. Take the recent Turkish earthquake, for example. Journalists from many organizations flew to the region en masse, but I sold a story about one particular Dog Rescue team to a regional UK newspaper because the team came from the newspaper's circulation area.

Major news events do not have to be disasters. Trade delegations, government delegations, cultural exchanges and sports events can make the national news headlines, but individual members of those groups come from small towns in their home countries, where you can generate local news stories.

Local News Events from Foreign Countries

Not all news items make the national news, which is the primary reason local and regional news outlets still exist.

The audiences of these outlets want to hear stories that directly affect them, or people like them, and stories about people they can relate to. As an international writer pitching to this market, you need to find stories about someone your audience members went to school with, who attended the local university, or who was born or lived in the area.

The expatriate community is your news source: businessmen, charity workers, teachers, your spouse, your children. If you can find a story and a hook, you can sell an article. One news editor of a regional daily newspaper recently told me she would "Take anything you can send with a local interest." For example:

• Did the subject of the article live in the market area you're targeting within the last few years?

• Does the subject have family there?

• Does the subject's company or organization have links to the region?

• Does the news item directly affect the audience? (E.g., are you covering a company that is similar to the region's largest local employer?)

Contacting the News Outlet

Your subject should be willing to help you contact their local news outlet. S/he should at least be able to tell you the name of the news organization, and hopefully give you a telephone number as well. Otherwise, you will have to search through the print and online news outlet directories (see below).

A direct approach by telephone works best with news outlets; news editors are accustomed to working quickly and making decisions on phoned-in sources, since news by its nature is time-limited. Call the switchboard and ask for the News Editor, unless your source has provided you with a specific editorial contact.

Have your speech planned before you reach the news editor. I find the following approach helpful:

• Introduce yourself as a freelance journalist or writer, giving your name and location.

• Be able to outline your story in two or three sentences.

• Have information to hand that will convince the editor that the story is of interest to their audience. Local interest information can be the school your source attended, the district his/her mother lives in, a quote from the current mayor who knows your source, or a famous local person your source is related to.

Delivering Your Story

Getting the story to the client quickly is the next important step; news stories can be past their sell-by date within twenty-four hours. Ask for the editor's e-mail address and the newsroom fax number. Then send your story by both methods: ISPs and computers crash, and you can type an e-mail address incorrectly or misdial a telephone number. Remember to always send the text of your story in the body of the e-mail message, never as an attachment.

Payment

Payment is closely linked to circulation and the importance of the story, though some organizations have a set fee for all freelance contributions. If the editor agrees to take your story, remember to ask about payment rates, and whether you need to send an invoice.

Be a leader," but what does that mean"....?

People are often told to "be a leader," but what does that mean?

How do people know how to act as a leader when no one defines it for them? There is a simple mantra that defines leadership

Here is a small story to make you understand in brief ….One day one nine-year old girl and her two brothers (seven and five years old respectively) were playing with neighborhood friends. Out of the blue, both brothers came running home upset because the girls in the group told them they didn't want to play with them. Father of the three was puzzled. Wasn't his daughter also in the group? How could she allow these girls to tell her younger brothers that they couldn't also play in the group? Why didn't she defend her brothers?

He sat down with his daughter and asked her about what had occurred. The bottom-line was that the popular opinion of the group was that the boys should not play with the girls. However, daughter acknowledged that she did not agree with the group's opinion. She thought it was wrong, but she did not say anything because the popular feeling was that the boys should leave. Thus father made his children understand that they need to be leaders instead of a follower. Great advice was given, but if you don't know what leadership is all about, how can you put it in play?

What is leadership?

I've read many books, articles, and journals on the subject of leadership and they offer wonderful ideas about being an effective leader. However, I have not found any that made the following statement. "Leadership is about having the self-confidence to do what is right even when it is not popular."

The scenario that I saw play out with the girl from above story reminded me of a common place business occurrence. How often are businesses people told to show leadership skills, but not taught what that means? You can yell to people from the highest mountaintop to be leaders, but if you don't help them to understand what leadership means, what ability do they have to change their behavior? How do you help people to feel confident doing what is right when it is not necessarily the popular thing to do?

Not long ago, Bud Selig, Commissioner of Major League Baseball, was faced with declining game attendance. As Commissioner, he was tasked with reversing the attendance trend. One idea he had was to enact interleague play where National League and American League teams play against each other during the season. Historically, the two leagues only played one another in the World Series. Most baseball fans were appalled. They considered this move to be blasphemous. Yet, Bud Selig was un-phased and put the program in place. Today, baseball attendance is booming and interleague play is a hit. Where would baseball be today if Bud Selig let the popular perspective change his decision?

This leadership mantra is not just for managers. It is for everyone

Sales people allow popular to win versus right, too. Imagine a sales person has been working with a client for three years. He has gotten to know the people in the account. He knows them personally. Now it is time for an account review, a periodic meeting on the performance of the relationship. A manager inserts himself into the process and informs the sales person of what is going to be done in that meeting. The sales person listens to the strategy and knows that it is not right for the account. If anything, it will jeopardize the relationship and cause the decision-maker to look foolish. However, the sales person says nothing to the manager because, after all, he is the boss.

The mantra is not about arrogance. It does not operate under the auspice that you know everything, and thus, your decision is always the right one. Those of you who are Greek mythology fans would call this hubris. No one knows everything. However, it is always easiest to follow the popular direction and not research to form your own opinion of what is right. In today's information world, there is no excuse for not taking a few minutes to research meaningful decisions before making them.

The mantra is not an advocation for insubordination. Yes, that sales person was correct. His manager is the boss. However, managers don't always have all of the necessary information to make an informed, educated decision. Managers count on their employees to share with them, in a diplomatic manner, information that will help them make the right decision. Few managers try to make decisions without the counsel of others. However, not enough employees step up and raise their concerns early in the process. They are masters of water-cooler speaker. "That will never work. They don't know about this factor that will cause the project to fail.."

Executives have some responsibility for this issue. Employees are often fearful of repercussion when sharing their thoughts, particularly when they are not consistent with the mainstream feeling (a.k.a. not the popular opinion). "Rather than get rebuked, I'll keep my mouth shut."

Companies need to create a culture where it is not only acceptable, but encouraged, for employees to raise their hand before the ship hits the iceberg. Growth comes from people challenging the status quo and feeling confident that they can present ideas, in contradiction to the popular, without retribution. At the same time, companies should show intolerance for those who fail to raise their hand, but say, "Yup, I knew we would sink when we hit the iceberg. I knew it all along."

The "ivory-tower" is famous, or is it infamous, for making decisions without having all of the most relevant information to do so prudently. The "ivory tower" is called a tower because of the gap between executives and employees. That gap might as well be an ocean if employees are not empowered to share what they feel is right when it is not popular. If it is culturally encouraged for employees to participate in decision-making, data gathering, the company is better positioned to be successful. Oftentimes, the best ideas are found by talking with those who do the work every day. People need to feel empowered to share what they feel is right. Some refer to this as "no sacred cows."

Anti Ragging Campaign

GUIDE Consultancy Services (GUIDE in short) and its promoting members regularly visit School Colleges, esp. Professional colleges to enlighten the children about the bad impact of ragging and provide them voluntary guidance , so as to reduce this evil as much as possible. This is done by presenting them with thw daily life ragging cases happening in today’s educational world , some times by giving examples as given below:

While the rest of us celebrate Holi, Destiny has forced the family of Aman Kachroo, A first year student of Dr. Rajinder Prasad Medical College at Tanda in Kangra dist. of HP, to mourn the death of their only son. Aman's parents had never imagined that their beloved son , who had gone to study medicine, would meet such a tragic end.

The family members alleged that according to Aman's Friends, he was beaten up by some of his seniors, who were allegedly in an inebriated condition....._source: The Tribune

This is just one of the many cases of ragging , which is going on with impunity in almost all the Professional Colleges, despite of the Supreme Court ruling clearly banning ragging of any sort in educational campus.

Every year a numerous young and intelligent minds are lost, Just due to the careless attitude of the Management of such Educational Institutions. This is totally their responsibility to take care of any student who is enrolled with them. But still...their attitude is who Cares...forgetting that one day it may happen to their own kith and kin.

GUIDE doesn't need to say any more...as the fact is already well known to all, whether they are common people or the people in power.

But my dear Indians, the time has come for us to stand up united against such evils prevailing in our society and make sure that such incidents don’t happen in future. It will take time but we need to take the step today.

The Brave parents of Aman have decided to launch a campaign against ragging...and it is the Duty of every Indian to support them so as to bring the Dumb authorities out of their sleep. The Time is now or Never....it is up to us to decide....

“AN ACTION PLAN FOR CHANGE “

A MOVEMENT SUPPORTED BY GUIDE CONSULTANCY SERVICES

Ordinary citizens, who feel, "enough is enough", and want to change the country into something which they will be proud to hand over to their children tomorrow, must join this movement. It is a movement of the intelligent masses who have so far silently watched the country go to the dogs, and now have realized that running of the country has been hijacked by people who only have a vested interest.

The movement has been sparked off by another ordinary citizen, just like any of us, who woke up to this need and is now calling you out to join hands.

What

A movement to light up the fire in the hearts of every Indian citizen to be awakened -"to Exercise their Rights & Fulfil their Obligations & Responsibilities". And this fire can be such which will "Purify the Good & Destroy the Bad" - a "Jwala" which can resurrect our India into "Sone ki Chidiya" once again.

The movement is currently apolitical with intentions to act as a pressure group which can, as needed, will align with right causes and people to achieve the goal.

Why

If each of us, Indian Citizens, are aware of our Rights and willing to exercise it, we not only will elect the right people to run the country, but we will make all public officials (servants) accountable to us, thereby ensuring better governance, better politicians, better bureaucracy, better infrastructure, killing of corruption, and a better India for ourselves & our future generation. This also means that we should also know our obligations & responsibilities to the country and fulfil these. If all of us, or a major chunk of people ensure that their rights as a citizen are exercised and are fulfilling their obligations as the citizens, almost all the problems plaguing the country can be solved, either Local issues or National issues.

Where

Every one should be willing to take the onus of their local areas, while support can be solicited from other people in this movement. While the local issues can be solved by ensuring your rights for accountability from the agencies responsible for solving the problems, pan-geographic issues can be taken up on a central basis.

How

All we ask is for DONATION - donation of your time. Commit certain time of your day, week or month to take up the issues of your area. Each one of you can be a Leader - step out and speak up and take up the cudgels. Motivate the people around you to join the movement and be part of the problem solving in their own area. If you are an expert in certain field, volunteer and be a part of the central expert teams, which is in the process of being set up, to help people solve the problems in their own areas.

We are an evolving movement and we plan to evolve as we come across challenges - each one of you is a leader of the country and start acting as one. Do Not Leave Your Well Being Into The Hands Of Others.

Every day I am getting new cases of Financial fraud or Family dispute (mostly due to drug abuse).
